Editor's review of QuickTime
Crystal clear video from AppleWith millions of users worldwide, Apple's QuickTime player still provides one of the best solutions for digital media. Whether you're watching streaming movie trailers online or diving headlong into QuickTime as a creation platform, you'll find little to quibble about in this veteran player.
Its few drawbacks are offset by the elegant interface and top-notch audio/video playback quality. QuickTime comes in two varieties. The standard free player handles popular audio, video, and graphic formats such as MPEG, 3GPP, Flash, AVI, AIFF, JPEG, GIF, WAV, MPEG-4, and AAC, among others. For $29.95 you can upgrade to the content-creation-friendly Pro version, which adds myriad features, such as easy editing, MPEG-4 production, and the ability to save movies from the Web. MPEG-2 support is available but at an additional cost of $19.95.
One feature that both versions sorely lack is a more robust file-management system, while the free version is a bit dry on features. Another drawback is the lack of support for Real and Windows Media file formats. Installing the application with the Web installer is simple and quick. A standalone installer also is available from Apple's Web site. QuickTime TV now allows swifter access to exclusive content, usually presented in high-quality MPEG-4 and AAC audio. Overall, QuickTime is a must-have for anyone surfing the Web or looking to experience the best in digital media.
