Editor's review of GOM Media Player

Jockeying for your musical attention

As various media players jockey for position to become your default setting for music and video streams, GOM Media Player's support for a wide range of file formats has helped it stand out as a firm favorite.

Supported formats include DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF, AVI, and MOV, as are common codecs like FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, and H263. A pop-out playlist can save and organize your various media files, though the limited sort modes--two--hardly makes it a champ.

More impressive are the customizable settings on the control panel. Here you can adjust a video's image brightness, hue, and saturation. There's no preview window, and changes occur as the video runs, so unless you care for a rousing session of trial and error, be sure to tweak the settings after clicking "play." There's also a built-in screen-capture feature that includes zooming and panning, customizable themes, hot keys, and a host of preset and adjustable audio controls.

GOM is weakest when you're looking for help documentation and trying to tweak Save settings, but overall it's a very strong player worth at least a supporting role in your video-watching habits, if not the lead.

Surfing made safer

Even the most advanced antispyware security can't guarantee your computer's safety, because most programs scan your site for digital nasties after they've already taken root. This ingenious Firefox extension warns you about covert spyware and browser-hijack attempts as you visit a site.

SiteAdvisor operates as an unobtrusive signal in your browser interface, turning green if the site is safe, yellow if it's suspect, and red if it senses threats or annoyances. The same coding system applies to Yahoo and Google search results, inserting a red, yellow, or green icon next to each link. Clicking these icons provides full diagnostics of the sites' threats, including links to other suspect sites, high spam counts, and the number of dangerous downloads.

We also liked the URL highlighter, which displays site rankings directly from your search engine, helping deflect drive-by installs that may initiate as soon as you type a URL. In our tests, SiteAdvisor turned out accurate and reliable results, and though it doesn't have a wide array of features, we urge any regular Firefox user to try this no-cost extension.

VideoDownloader 1.1.1

Requirements:Windows (all), Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0
Limitations:No limitations
Date Added:October 20, 2006

Publisher's description of VideoDownloader

From Javi Moya:

Download videos from Youtube, Google, Metacafe, iFilm, Dailymotion, and a growing list of more than 60 video sites. You can also download all embedded objects on a Web page directly. VideoDownloader add a small icon on the status bar at the bottom of your Firefox window and a toolbar button. Just click the button to download the video you are watching.

Version 1.1.1 may include unspecified updates, enhancements or bug fixes.

Editor's review of VideoDownloader

Many popular video Web sites obscure video links to prevent downloading, but this freeware cuts through the jungle to find the proper URLs. VideoDownloader's sparse interface is simply a button on your browser status bar.

Navigate to any of the more than 60 video sites supported by VideoDownloader to find a video you want to download. Just click the status bar button and this utility searches the Web page for the video's true URL. A dialog box opens with the link. You merely right-click it and save the file to your system.

This application doesn't help you view the files, but players are easy to find. Installing this utility isn't a familiar operation, but users experienced with installing Firefox tools should have no trouble. One improvement would be the ability to download the file immediately by pressing the status-bar button. Still, we can easily recommend this application for any level user looking to download videos.

PDF Download 1.0.1.1 screenshot
From Nitro PDF Software:

PDF Download is a Firefox extension that allows to choose whether you want to view a PDF file inside the browser (as PDF or HTML) or you want to download it. This is the right extension for you if you are annoyed to click on a link and then discover that Firefox is loading the Adobe or other PDF plug-in (very heavy) and is trying to show a pdf file directly inside your browser. This extension, every time you click on a link, checks if the target is a PDF file and in this case let you choose what you want to do: open pdf file inside a new tab, download it to the file system, or view it as HTML (like Google View as HTML feature).

Version 1.0.1.1 adds support for Firefox 3.0b4pre and language support for da-DK, sr-YU, sl-SI locales.

Editor's review of Better Gmail 2

Better your Gmail

Google's long-awaited upgrade to Gmail has broken nearly all of the plug-ins designed to enhance the webmail client. Better Gmail was one of the most thorough Gmail extensions for Firefox, and the publisher has now begun compiling a new version to spruce up the new Gmail.

The handful of additional features it provides are good, no doubt. There's the forced https connection, useful for us paranoids. There's a forced mailto, as well, so that all mailto's in other HTML pages open up a blank e-mail window in Gmail. The Inbox Count First feature shows the unread message count from the in-box in the tab title. Other features include support for keyboard shortcut macros to expand the preloaded set, support for Google Apps domains, message details that appear only for the most recent message in a conversation, and attachment icons that replace the boring paperclip with a program-appropriate icon: a ZIP attachment will use the ZIP icon.

Although it still has fewer features than before, Better Gmail 2 also has less clutter, and is strongly recommended.

Publisher's description of Firefox Portable

Firefox Portable 3 screenshot
From PortableApps.com:

Mozilla Firefox is a fast, full-featured Web browser. Firefox includes pop-up blocking; tab-browsing; integrated Google search; simplified privacy controls; a streamlined browser window that shows you more of the page than any other browser; and a number of additional features that work with you to help you get the most out of your time online.

Version 3 includes a bevy of new features and changes, including a redesigned address-bar pull-down menu that includes bookmarks and history, a new add-on manager, the ability to pause and resume downloads, malware protection, a better password manager, and OS-specific themes.

Editor's review of Firefox Portable

Firefox to go

Read CNET senior editor Rob Vamosi's extended review of Firefox 3.

No longer a fledgling upstart, Firefox 3 is full-featured, lightning fast, and an able Internet Explorer foe. Previous versions have seen Mozilla's approach to features such as tabbed browsing and extensions become extremely popular. Even though Firefox 3 lacks a killer feature, it offers significant improvements not to be missed.

Version 3 introduces a multitude of safety and usability features. The location bar drop-down menu now includes URLs from both your browsing history and your bookmarks. A new Add-Ons manager includes a built-in plug-in search engine, saving you the previous trip to the Mozilla Web site. Single-click the star icon on the right of the location bar to bookmark the current page, or double-click on it to simultaneously add and edit the bookmark entry. You can tag bookmarks, too. Other impressive new features include password confirmation before adding it to the saved passwords list, the ability to pause and resume downloads, and merged forward and backward history lists.

Firefox 3 now runs faster and, according to Mozilla, is less susceptible to hacks and other vulnerabilities. The browser now warns your system's antivirus program when you download a file, and anti-malware and anti-phishing utilities now throw up a warning page before allowing Firefox to load risky sites. The favicon reveals Web sites' ownership details and displays the security level of your connection to that site.

Developers will appreciate that Firefox 3's new graphics and text rendering code provide rendering improvements in CSS and SVG as well as improved display of fonts and complex scripts. Firefox 3--still open-source, as ever--is a browser that all users should consider making their default Web-surfing tool.
